Anthony C., President of HardKore Inc."It was a pleasure shooting the fine rifles that you build out of 'The Thummper - Precision Shooting De-VICE'. With The Thummper you can truly test the accuracy of loads and the rifle because it reduces the recoil and takes the human error out of the sighting-in process. This is especially true with large bores like the .416 UltraCat and .458 Lott we tested, which are otherwise hard to test and sight-in. People are generally more than happy with a 3-4" group out of these calibers because they just don't want to shoot anymore. Your rifles are finely built and extremely accurate as I was watching through the spotting scope as Tom McIntyre, author of "Seasons and Days: A Hunting Life," shot a 3 shot, 1 hole group, with your .416 UltraCat.

Impressive, and truly a testament to the quality of the rifles that you build."

Q: "What is your specialty?"

A: Hunting rifles. The old saying is that "only accurate rifles are interesting" so We strive to build the best in "interesting" hunting firearms.

Q: "Do you make the action and everything?"

A: No, we use factory actions, nearly any brand you wish. You can supply a rifle or action of your choice for us to build up.  In some cases we supply the action if you cannot locate one, although we do not generally sell guns.

Q: "I want a special rifle, something no body else will have at my range/hunting camp.   Can you help?"

A: Sure we are experts in locating and assembling the materials that make a rifle  that suits the specific needs of you the client.  Click here, To see just a few of the custom touches we can offer are shown.  Get a Quote.

Q: "What caliber should I build?"Stevens Favorite, Custom 22

A: It depends on the use of the gun. Take a look at Cartridges I have loved and Wildcats these lists may offer some ideas. E-mail us with the planned use of the gun and we can offer suggestions based on your needs, or desires.  We chamber for factory cartridges and wildcats alike.

Q: "I did'nt see the caliber I was looking for on your list, what now?"

71 Browning, 450 Alaskan, by Z-Hat.A: No problem, we can have reamers made for any caliber you might be interested.  We frequently add reamers to our inventory.  Just let us know what your looking for.  email:  Rifle.Builder@z-hat.com.

Q: "Who's barrel should I use?"

A: Our standard barrel is a Douglas XX Premium, we also use many Montana Rifle barrels as they arrive custom hand lapped. Over the years we have found Douglas & Montana to be reliable, professional, with superior customer service. However we will use barrels from any reputable maker upon your request. For more info go to Barrel Work.

Q: "What can I expect in the way of accuracy?"

A: It depends a little on the materials you choose, most of our bolt action rifle will shoot ½ minute of angle (MOA). If this is one of your concerns we can make suggestions to improve your rifle's accuracy. See our Client comments page. For the best accuracy there are many things that need to be done to the rifle. See our Accuracy page of this site, we can promise ½ MOA if all the necessary work is done.

Custom Winchester 70, fluted barrel

Q: "Do you build Takedown rifles?"

A: Sure, we actually offer two models right now.  The Winchester and Browning 1895 Lever gun.  Our bolt gun is a Model 70 takedown.

Q: "What kind of stock should I have; wood, laminated wood, or synthetic?"

A: Wood is classic and nearly everyone enjoys a colorful well figured stock for it's traditional look. Wood has warmth, depth, and often people speak of wood stocks as if they are alive. The one draw back to wood is that it is not stable, moisture and temperature can change a wood stock and effect accuracy. Laminated wood is a great compromise for anyone who likes the feel of wood but desires the stability and waterproof characteristics of synthetics.  We have recently made arrangements to offer our clients Acra-Bond stocks.  Acra-Bond is a special laminate which retains the look of a standard walnut stock while adding the benefits of laminates.  Synthetics are tough and stable, virtually unaffected by temperature and weather. Synthetics can be painted any way you desire, some makers now offer them with a wood finish that is incredibly good. The way you use your firearm and your personal tastes should dictate the material you choose. These days we sell more H-S Precision synthetic stocks than any other brand or material.

Q: "I want to build my own stock, can you help out?"

A:  Yes,  we have a set of drawings available for the do it your selfer.  These drawings are specifically for the American Classic design, however the proportions and many details are the same on all designs of stocks.  For more info click here.

Q: "What type of actions do you prefer?"Custom Winchester 95

A: Bolt actions, of many manufacturers are popular, with Remington being at the top of the list. Next in popularity is probably Winchester. We also do a lot of single shot work, look at the reamer list (Cartridges I Have Loved) you will see several black powder cartridges are available. Variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes, so we work with just about any action that the customer wants, as long as it's safe.  We do a lot of work on Winchester and Browning 95 lever actions, as well as the Browning 71.  We even find time to fit in a few single shots.

Q: "I want a long magnum, like a 338-378 Weatherby, an STW, or a Remington 300 Ultra, what action is best?"

A: There are more choices today than there ever has been. The CZ 550 is a great choice for a starting point.   Winchester 70 long magnum actions, or of course the Weatherby long action.  Ruger has it's Safari action and it's very popular.   Ruger #1 actions are often used for these big calibers too.   We have access to a fine custom Mauser action available either round top, with double, or single square bridges ( this is a premium custom item).   Montana Rifleman offers a Model 70 style action with some great features, and Olympic Arms has a large 98 Mauser action made to handle up to 505 Gibbs.   Of course Remington has a long action set up for the Ultra cartridges.   Any of these actions would be good choices for building those big magnums of course there are others available, contact us to discuss it.   Bottom line is we strive to work with the materials that interest you, the client.   416 Rigby anyone?
